The Founder

Christopher D. Kercher

Chris Kercher practiced for more than 17 years at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, where he became a partner and founded the firm’s AI & Data Analytics Group — the first dedicated AI litigation practice at a major U.S. law firm, recognized with The American Lawyer’s 2025 Legal Services Innovation Award. He is a Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School, where he teaches “A Litigator’s Guide to AI.”

The Vision

Put the first chair closer to the work.

Litigation is decided under conditions that don’t improve: incomplete information, a running clock, an adversary working to make every choice wrong. The lawyer’s craft is what happens there — advising a client who must decide before the facts are in, reading a courtroom and changing course, deciding what to concede so the rest lands.

Most AI legal technology promises to need lawyers less. This firm was founded by asking the opposite: how do you put the first chair closer to the work — deeper in the record, earlier in the thinking, in the room for the moments that decide the case? The technology extends a lawyer’s attention. The counsel, the judgment, the standing up — those jobs belong to a lawyer. At this firm, they always will.
